Have you heard of the James Webb Space Telescope? It’s one of the hottest news this week - and you’ll see why.
It’s pretty much a bigger, better telescope that’s been developed to give us higher resolutions of images from space (like from 140p to 720/1080p haha). Know what this means? A whole new level of discovering our universe and our origins! Check out its resolution - more about this below.

💭 TECH FOOD FOR THOUGHT
A whole new world with the Webb Telescope 🔭
Gosh, how beautiful is that?
The James Webb Space Telescope is a collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency, created to see farther into our origins like the formation of stars and planets, help answer outstanding questions we have, and to continue making breakthrough discoveries in astronomy!
Last week, NASA announced a critical milestone of reaching full focus with the telescope. Then yesterday, tweeted a sneak peek on exactly how powerful the new telescope is, being compared from the retired Spitzer Space Telescope. Engineers are beyond impressed and agency officials says its resolution is “as good as physically possible” for the telescope’s size.
Imagine how much more we’ll see, and learn?
🌱 TECH FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Solving plastic pollution with the Plastic Scanner 🛍
Only 9% of plastics get recycled. 12% gets incinerated and 79% goes to landfills or our oceans. Why? Because the sorting facilities or technologies you’d find in developed countries, you couldn’t find in the developing countries yet. Unfortunately, it just hasn’t been as accessible. This is what Jerry de Vos wanted to fix, and has since been developing an open-source design for anyone to build their own Plastic Scanners!
The Plastic Scanner mimics the way large factories sort plastics using infrared reflection/spectroscopy. It’s a well-known technique for identifying different types of plastics, but is very costly to build. Jerry and his team built a new and low-cost approach with “discrete” infrared spectroscopy, including an easy assemble-it-yourself breakout board and instructions on how to transform it into a handheld device - ready to be picked up and built by anyone. Their designs are available on WikiFactory!
