Being in the startup world, you’d probably look twice when you see “unicorn” anywhere - even on Nat Geo videos about “the unicorns of the sea” 😂
You might have heard of them: They’re called narwhals - seen in the arctic waters of Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia, and can be as big as 17 feet in length at 1,905 kg! That tusk? It’s actually an enlarged tooth with sensory capability and up to 10 million nerve endings.
Haha we’re geeking out on this, but apparently these are also what Canadian unicorns are called - narwhal companies.
Maybe it doesn’t have as much ring to “unicorn”, though it’s interesting to think what if we called all unicorns narwhals instead? It’s after all a real creature, not a mythical one, to reflect everything else that’s real behind these revolutionary startups! (They’re pretty rare too [unfortunately], with only 80,000 left.) Behind these popular social media platforms are teams and real people like us. It doesn’t always come to mind the content moderators who ensure we continue seeing the best, most relevant content to us, and those who protect us from dangerous or frankly, disgusting content.
TikTok, or ByteDance, got sued by its former content moderators on how the job has traumatized them and that adequate care was not provided. They have had to review content on "child sexual abuse, rape, torture, bestiality, beheadings, suicide, and murder” without any safeguards like blurring or changing the colors of disturbing videos. Using TikTok’s own software, they would only have <25 seconds to review each video and would view multiple videos simultaneously. They also had two 15 minute breaks, 1 hour lunches for each 12-hour workdays.
No one should have to deal with content that are obviously disturbing, how are the bot-moderators not helping with this enough? And what happens to the people who submit those videos?
