Microgravity (or weightlessness) in space is dangerous for our bodies - it's caused muscle loss, weak bones and vision issues for astronauts over the years! So to protect their health (and hopefully unlock the key to living on the moon and Mars?), researchers from Kyoto University and construction company Kajima Corp are ideating on creating living facilities that function on artificial gravity 🤯
Named as the Luna Glass and Mars Glass, each one will be shaped into big, hollow cones more than 1,300 ft tall (like the Empire State Building). While it spins, the centrifugal force will push anything inside towards the interior walls - and if they get the speed just right (1 rotation every 20s), they believe they can match it to the same force of gravity on Earth. So you’d be able to do anything as if you were on Earth’s surface!
They say they can build a prototype of it on the moon by 2050 - but this is multigenerational work and can take at least 100 more years to completion!
🌱 TECH FOR SUSTAINABILITYEggs to help in our battle with microplastics 🍳
You know when you crack an egg and parts of its shell gets stuck inside the egg whites? We can actually collect microplastics in a similar manner!
When freeze-dried and superheated (up to 900C) in an oxygen-free space, the pure protein system from the egg whites create a mix of carbon fibre strands and graphene sheets that can remove 99% of tiny plastics + 98% of salt from seawater (fried and whipped eggs work too!).
The salt removal might create an issue for the oceans, but the researchers are on it to minimize environmental impact, and refine the manufacturing process to make mass production possible and accessible.
