ALTERNATIVE BANKING
A bold fintech move
Brex, a fintech startup, placed a bid for the early-stage and growth portfolios within Silicon Valley Bank’s business when the bank was being sold.
Although the bid did not work out, Brex co-CEO and co-founder Henrique Dubugras stated that the idea came from a customer who thought Brex could handle those customers better than big banks.
Despite this, the startup has seen a significant increase in its deposits, as not every startup or early-stage business that once banked at SVB wants to move their cash over to a big bank. Read more by click the article below:
AI - BEYOND HUMAN CAPABILITIES
Detecting early cancer with AI
Jean Tyler, a 75-year-old woman from South Shields, has been declared cancer-free after participating in a study called Colo-Detect, which used artificial intelligence (AI) to detect bowel cancer.
The study, which is being conducted at 10 NHS Trusts, uses AI to flag up tissue that could be missed by the human eye during a colonoscopy. The trial has recruited around 2,000 patients from 10 NHS trusts.
A proclaimed “world-leading” detection system, this is predicted to be a highly popular tool in coming years. The second highest mortality rate amongst various cancers, this AI will save lives.
REGULATING A NEW AI ERA
Forging a Path for Responsible AI
The responsible and ethical development and use of AI has become increasingly critical as its innovation outpaces news cycles and captures public attention. The European Union has been working on enacting laws around responsible AI, while technology leaders and the US government are working together to map out a unified vision for responsible AI.
The White House has announced new actions to promote responsible AI and protect people's rights and safety. These actions include new investments to power responsible American AI R&D, public assessments of existing generative AI systems, and policies to ensure the US government is leading by example in mitigating AI risks and harnessing AI opportunities.
Although the US government's investment in AI is directionally correct, it is microscopic compared to other countries' government investments, and an immediate opportunity exists to amplify the impact of investment through academic partnerships for workforce development and research.
