💭 TECH FOOD FOR THOUGHTFake news are only getting smarter, beware of deepfakes 🚨
Deepfakes aren’t exactly new, you may have even seen some of them - like Barack Obama calling Donald Trump “a total complete dipshit” or Mark Zuckerberg bragging about having total control of billions of stolen data. It’s essentially synthetic media that uses a form of artificial intelligence called deep learning, to replace existing medias with someone else’s likeness.
Most recently last week, enemy-hackers targeted Ukraine’s TV channel Ukraine-24 and broadcasted a deepfake, featuring Ukraine president Zelenskyy telling Ukrainians to put their weapons down and surrender. It barely fooled anyone though, as Ukrainians were quick to ridicule the video (his head appears too large for his body, with inconsistent skin complexions, and just had overall weird facial movement), and Zelenskyy himself quickly posted on his official Instagram account to call it a “childish provocation”.
Deepfakes can easily be found out if you look close enough, but it can still trick many people so be wary of what you share (Also, remember there are many tools that are designed to trick you, like voice-distortion apps!).
🌱 TECH FOR SUSTAINABILITYMaking jet fuel from sunlight and air 🛩
Aviation contributes to about 3% of the world’s total human-made CO2 emissions, a number that’s risen rapidly over the last 2 decades. Good thing scientists in Switzerland have found a way to drop fossil fuels and make jet fuel using sunlight and air!
Led by Aldo Steinfeld, Profession of Renewable Energy Sources at ETH Zurich, researchers have built an industrial plant that extracts CO2 and water from the air. Solar energy is then used to split each compound to create syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The syngas is then further processed to create kerosene and methanol to use as a substitute for traditional fuels.
Through this, the solar fuels do still release CO2, but only as much as when they are combusted so no additional emissions are generated. Funding is in place to build the world’s first industrial-scale production plant for solar fuels in Germany, due in 2023. They’re finding ways to keep it competitive and scalable!
