Has anyone ever told you that you talk in your sleep? Maybe have a few (or a lot of) snores throughout the night? You wished you could hear it yourself - and now you can, with ShutEye! 😉
Featured in Time Magazine, ShutEye is an app that helps track the quality of your sleeps, from when you’ve fallen asleep no, how deep you’ve been asleep, to times you’ve snored that you can replay, as well as sleep-talks, teeth grinding and even farts 😂 You can also set alarms and choose to listen to music, stories and meditations to fall asleep to.
Sorry mates, this app is only available on iOS for now. Let the makers know we need an Android one on Product Hunt! Otherwise, Sleep Cycle is also an alternative.
💭 TECH FOOD FOR THOUGHTUsing AI to catch pedophiles 👊
A tough topic, but one that should be talked about. Child sexual abuse is a global issue. And often, the only visible clue for identifying abusers are through their hands.
The veins in our hands, arms, wrinkles in the fists and our fingers are as unique as our fingerprints (this applies to twins too!). With this, forensic scientists have helped arrest many abusers by using hand-based personal identification techniques. But with the current system, scientists take a lot of time to look through footage of child abuse, to use what they can to match veins, wrinkles and movement. Single cases sometimes take up to 2 weeks with an 86% success rate.
Professor Sue Black, a forensic scientist at Lancaster University, are developing a way to use AI to help speeden up the process. They are training their algorithms to understand what hands look like so they can learn to identify and extract key features. They’re always looking for contributors to anonymously take photos of their hands to further train their algorithms - contribute if you can!
🌱 TECH FOR SUSTAINABILITYTurning fog into drinking water 💦
The German Water Foundation (WasserStiftung) has found a way to help mountainous and dry regions have better access to drinking water: by turning fog into water using 3D mesh - mimicking the same phenomenon as how spiderwebs collect droplets from mist!
The CloudFisher, which looks like a netted gate, traps water droplets within its mesh which then fall into a pipe below, that leads to a reservoir where the drinking water is collected. It can harvest up to 36,000 litres of water a day for 800 residents - in Mount Boutmezguida, one of the driest areas in Morocco!
