We all see technology advance every day, but it’s always still amazing to us how we’ve seen all of these emerge or what might, including the next evolution or version of the Internet: Web 3. 💭 TECH FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Tiny robot bugs that can go anywhere 🦟
Engineers at the University of Pittsburgh have created tiny bugs that can help do what us humans can’t, like reach tight spaces or go through harsh or inhospitable environments.
With bugs under a certain size, jumping across a surface is actually more energy-efficient than crawling, which inspired the movement of the tiny robots which are made of polymeric artificial muscle. It works like loading an arrow into a bow and shooting it, the robots latch on to build up energy and release it to spring forward.
These bugs can help with tasks like taking water samples, going through unsanitary areas for imaging or environmental evaluation. Their versatile movement and lightweight structure allows them to move along surfaces like sand and even hop across water!
🌱 TECH FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Making wood with kombucha waste 🪵
One third of the world’s tree species are at risk of extinction, with 440 species having fewer than 50 individuals left. Which is what motivated Gabe Tavas, winner of this year’s James Dyson award, to create a substitute material to wood and protect ecosystems in the Amazon rainforest, called “Pyrus”.
Wood requires 2 ingredients, cellulose which provides its shape and strength, and lignin, the glue for everything. Acidic drinks like kombucha produce coherent sheets of cellulose on top of any liquid they are living within, and Pyrus is made by blending those sheets of cellulose to an even consistency and then embed an algae-based gel. When the gel dries, it hardens significantly and is placed under a mechanical press to form a flat sheet of wood, which can be sanded, cut and coated with resins just like any other form of wood. Amazing!
