TRENDING: CONSCIOUSNESS IN AI
Experts are Warning Against Consciousness in AI 🧠
Elon Musk, a technology billionaire, and his ex-wife, Tallulah Riley, have both expressed concerns about the safety of further AI development. In a recent letter, they called for a halt in AI advancement until effective safety measures could be established. Tallulah Riley also tweeted that artificial general intelligence (AGI), which can perform tasks at a human-level, needs protection similar to environmental conservation.
A Google engineer, Blake Lemoine, was fired last year for suggesting that an AI system was capable of feeling emotions. Lemoine was responsible for creating Google's large language model called Lamda, which forms the basis of its rival ChatGPT system, Bard.
Google has asserted that Lamda was simply communicating in a human-like manner as it was programmed to do, and that it was not sentient.

ROAD BLOCKS TO A GREENER LIFE 😔
Green Revolution Concerns
Do you want to live green?
If everything goes according to plan, the construction of the world's second-largest wind energy project will begin in the latter half of this year. The SunZia Wind and Transmission project, an ambitious venture, will merge a 3.5-gigawatt wind farm in New Mexico with a 500-mile transmission line that will transport the energy to Arizona. The US is in dire need of more renewable energy and an expanded grid, making this a critical endeavor.
However, the road to constructing this project has been challenging. The initial permits for the project were submitted 14 years ago, in 2009, highlighting an urgent problem. One of the reasons there aren't more projects like SunZia is that it takes a long time to obtain clearance to construct green energy infrastructure.
The Biden administration has set an admirable objective of decarbonizing the grid by 2035, which would necessitate a fivefold increase in renewable energy. To achieve this goal, the government will invest a historic amount of money in green energy, over $400 billion via the Inflation Reduction Act alone. However, the sluggish pace at which energy projects move poses a threat to this goal. Wind and solar farms, geothermal power plants, and hydroelectric dams can take between five and 15 years to obtain construction authorization.
